Debates is usually an arguement on ethnics. It can also cover social, economic, and political issues. For those of you in the NFL (National Forensic League), you know there are three types of debates.
-One is Congress. In this event, you debate with about a dozen people. You argue over an bill that range from the death penalty to women drafts. It is meant for the beginner debator, but is also good for experience debators. The style is almost exactly like a Parliament. You spend four minutes arguing about a bill. After speaking, you are questioned for two minutes. You can speak a second time. In that second speech, you orient yourself to refuting and strenghten you earlier arguements.
-Another is LD (Lincoln Douglas). This is much like Congress, but is harder because it is with only two people. You also get a lot less time to make questions and your next speech. In this event, you can't choose your side on a topic. This event deals strongly with mostly morality. This year it was sancity of life over the quality of life. You can see that you must argue over life and its value. You must also use evidence to support your case. Sometimes someone can even argue on what you cited on your source. To do well in LD, you must be polite, well-spoken, making strong and understandable points.
-Policy Debates is when a team of two argues with another team of two. This event is lenghty and boring, but is very good for the skilled. It is very aggressive, but there is still politeness. In this event, your ability to take notes is very important. Most people in Policy Debate are well-prepared. They usually bring boxs and boxs of evidence.
